The Barbour County Senior Center has been known through the years for its involvement in providing social and recreational

opportunities for older residents. When most people visit the Senior Center they see various activities going on, such as bingo

games, the string band playing, and other recreational activities. The nutritious lunches provide good food and fellowship.

While all this busy and cheerful activity bubbles on the surface, many of our most important services are provided quietly and

discreetly to elderly residents of the county, who need assistance in their homes with their activities of daily living. Through the

Senior Center’s In-Home Service Department, the staff assists approximately fifty Barbour County residents in their homes

with personal care, housekeeping, and meal preparation., The home delivered meal service provides a hot, nutritious meal to

one hundred people, five days a week, who may be recovering from a recent hospital stay or for other reasons are unable to

come to the congregate nutrition site.

The Barbour County Senior Center’s staff assists older residents with the paperwork that they encounter at every turn in their

lives - medical bills, insurance, income tax returns, applications for assistance, etc. Family members that area “long distance

caregivers” the Senior Center provides an essential link to enable them to arrange for needed services for their loved ones.

Behind the scenes at the Barbour County Senior Center, you will find the staff conducting the serious business of supporting an

extensive and dynamic program. Members of the office staff attend to the necessary paperwork: bookkeeping, reports

scheduling, etc, Everything must be carefully planned, recorded, documented, and reported, from a wholesale food order for

the nutrition program, to the hours spent and tasks accomplished by an In-home Service Provider.,

What you see is only a small part of what the Senior Center is about. The light side and serious side of what we do are both

important, and they’re both a part of the “ups and downs” we all know in life, This Senior Center is here to help you celebrate

the good times, but we want you to know that we will be there, in our quiet a way, to support you and help you through the

hard times, too!
