Location
Historic Philippi was the site for the first land battle of the Civil War.  The Tygart River weaves through town passing under the famous covered bridge whose original design dates from the mid-19th century.  Other features include a Richardsonian courthouse made of red stone, Alderson-Broaddus College, and the historic Mainstreet.

History
The Tygart Valley Star Bed and Breakfast is named after the newspaper that was written, and produced in the main residence during the 1890ís.  Although edifices have existed on this site since before the civil war, the large 3 storey brick house that is seen today dates to 1883, with a significant addition added circa 1910.  Throughout its life, the property has always been owned by prominent Barbour Countians. Melville Peck, twice mayor of Philippi, and his wife the daughter of J.N.B. Crim, the wealthy 19th century businessman built most of the current brick building. In 1907, Edmund H. Crim, President of the First National Bank of Philippi moved in with his wife, Virginia Talbott Crim.  Their daughter, Lucille Crim, came back to live here with her children while her husband, Col. P.A. Chesser served in World War II.  Colonel and Mrs. Chesser retired here as well.

The Property
The main house features a beautiful wood paneled staircase, and antique Steinway piano, fretwork, 100 year old blackboard, and other Victorian adornments.  Many of the antiques are original to the house.  Two bedrooms have been restored to period furnishings and decorations.  A fully-remodeled bathroom boasts a large two-person jacuzzi.

The fully remodeled carriage house is now open to bed and breakfast guests.  Originally stables dating back to the 19th century, the building was, at some unknown date, transformed into living quarters, perhaps for servants.  The carriage house is now a two bedroom suite with cathedral ceilings to expose the beautiful American chestnut beams used in original construction, and an antique clawfoot tub.  The walls are decorated with old photographs depicting Barbour County history.  It also has a living room and a fully equipped kitchen and a front porch.  Guests will be able to make their own meals if they desire, but they will be treated to fresh home baked goods each morning.

Guests may choose from several different accommodations (click here for descriptions and rate information). Furthermore, two magnificent rooms are open exclusively to guests for dining, sitting, playing games or simply watching television or movies.

Breakfast consists of fresh fruit, home baked goods and more standard breakfast fare.
